New Athens

New Athens was platted in 1817. Oliver H. Burdette built the first steam-propelled vehicle in the U.S. in New Athens. He drove it around the county fairgrounds in 1873.

Franklin Museum. Located in the Franklin College building, the museum has on display the 1887 New Athens fire pumper, 1917 student desk, and pictures of college classes, antique furniture, and cooper’s tools.
