Harrison County

Harrison County was officially formed in 1813 from parts of Jefferson and Tuscarawas counties.

Moravian Trail. Named for the Moravian missionaries who used it to travel between Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and the Indian villages of eastern Ohio. The trail climbs from the Ohio River at Mingo Junction through Cadiz and along the Deersville Ridge, then down to the valley east of Gnadenhutten. Feed Springs, west of Deersville, was a popular stopping place for travelers to feed and water the animals used for transportation. An historical marker located in Deersville gives additional information about the trail.
Elk Farm. Wild-N-Wooly Acres Elk Farm is located on Ohio 646 east of Germano. The farm has 400 elk on 200 acres of pasture.
Harrison State Forest. The 1344 acres of forest is located three miles north of Cadiz, east of Ohio 9. The park features two campgrounds, hiking trails, and many ponds stocked for fishing.
Tappan Lake. Located near Deersville. 2,350-acre lake with 5,000 acres of surrounding public land. Park with campgrounds, swimming beach, vacation cabins, hiking trails, activity center. Marina, 120 horsepower limit. A Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District lake. (740) 922-3649
Clendening Lake. Near Freeport. Largest undeveloped lake in Ohio. 1,800-acre lake with 4,800 surrounding acres of public land. Great bass fishing. Marina with campground (740) 658-3691. 10 horsepower limit. A Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District lake.
Piedmont Lake. 2,270 acres of water, 4,416 acres of public land. Known for musky fishing. Marina with campground (740) 658-3735. 10 horsepower limit. A Muskingum Conservancy District lake.
Ourant Schoolhouse. A one-room schoolhouse dating back to 1873 is located off Deersville Ridge Rd. Co. 2, on Ourant Road. Maintained by former pupils, they hold a cakewalk in June and a homecoming in August. Not open to the public at other times.
Harrison County Airport. Located on State Route 9 three miles south of Cadiz. The airport has 4400 x 75 foot hard-surface lighted runway.
