Moorefield

The village was platted in 1815 by Michael Moore and Gabriel Cane. In July of 1863 Confederate General Jogn Hunt Morgan stopped here with his rebel calvary men for food and rest. Morgan and his men were near the end of a twenty-seven day foray through the north to disrupt supplies and buy time for the Confederate forces. After dining on pound cake and preserves and napping, the raiders moved on toward New Athens, Georgetown, and Harrisville. Morgan was captured in Columbiana County and served time in the Ohio Penitentiary.
