How How, Alumni!

The snow is finally beginning to melt at Wanake, but sled riding and hiking through the snow are still possible as of today, Sunday, March 07, 2010. We just concluded the first interview weekend of the year with 30 in attendance.

I am writing with sad news today and I apologize that I haven’t written you sooner. It has been hard to talk about and so we were giving ourselves some time here on site to adjust to the fact that Maisey, our camp dog for six years, died, now nearly a month ago. Indeed, she died in her favorite season doing what she loved most, playing in the snow. We will miss her. More information follows.

Have a great week and keep Wanake in your prayers as we prepare for the spring retreat ministry and summer camp.

In Christ,

Julie Lautt

Maisey – Wanake’s Camp Dog from 2004-2010

Her blue eyes held your gaze as she approached to get some attention. Maisey was not a lap dog. Her large husky-looking body would wiggle with excitement as she anticipated meeting you. That “large dog look” kept those who didn’t know she was friendly honest as they arrived at Wanake.

Maisey never barked, just talked to you about why you were not paying attention to her or wouldn’t share your snack. She always knew when you needed someone to just sit with or needed to romp in the field or on your way here and there. She always greeted guests for the weekend and campers on Sundays. More than once Maisey led guests who were out hiking back to main camp. What a dog! They would exclaim.

Phil White’s nickname for Maisey early on said it all. He called her “Visa” because she was everywhere you wanted to be: in the driver’s seat of the camp pick up, sleeping on the couch in the staff lounge, and lying in a ring of campers getting her belly rubbed!

Maisey was Wanake’s neighbor’s dog (Michelle and Larry Glasgow, the neighbors behind Outpost Barn hill). Maisey showed up at the Sugardale Meats plant where Larry Glasgow works as a truck driver. She was a smart stray who knew how, when and where to get the leftover choice cuts! (Maisey continued to be a picky eater, only really enjoying the good cuts of meat, including fresh groundhog!) One day she stood between Larry and the door of his truck and when he opened the door, she got in. Life at the Glasgow farm was super, but every once in a while the joyous sounds coming from Arnold Lake beckoned Maisey to explore what the campers were doing at Wanake. It wasn’t long before she showed up for every event.

One day Michelle had to pick Maisey up again and had to pull her out of Bible study. J That is when Michelle and Larry decided that since they couldn’t keep Maisey home, they needed to adopt her out. Needless to say, Wanake has first dibs and Maisey came to be at home at Wanake. The Whites (Phil, Amy, Jonathan and Sarah) gave Maisey a true home when she wasn’t “on duty” as camp dog.

We will miss Maisey, who died on February 7th (8th?) of 2010. She is buried at the Sunrise Point near the row of pine trees. Her marker is a large stone. You are welcome to come and celebrate her special life and ministry at Wanake.
