Webmaster note: Christina continues her description of the Slovakian Christmas.

January 13, 2004

The holidays here are kind of longer. We have Striebry noc (Christmas eve), Christmas, the day after Christmas and Silvester (new years).

On Christmas Eve we cooked a lot! And then sat down with the family and had kapustnica (sauerkraut and kielbasa soup) and Carp. Then the kids went up stairs and after a while the parents rang a bell saying that Jesus had come and left presents. So we all opened presents Christmas Eve.

At midnight I went to church with my host mom and grandmother. It was a really pretty ceremony and church, but it was crowded.

On Christmas day we slept in and had turkey, knedly and red cabbage for lunch. Knedly, from what I’ve been told, is made from potatoes but it looks like bread (we had cooked everything Christmas eve). In the afternoon we relaxed and then went to visit family friends.

On the 26th we had chicken for lunch and what was left over from the two previous meals. In the evening other relatives came to visit. I got sick on Silvester so I didn’t go anywhere but it was kind of like our Fourth of July except everyone had firecrackers!!!
