Paul McCartney dead or alive?!?

Can you explain the whole "Paul is dead" thing?
How did it start?
What were the clues?
Were the Beatles in on it?

In the late 60's there was a rumor that Paul McCartney was dead. There were "clues" on album covers and in lyrics and stuff. Just wanted to know the specifics of it as I never got enough info from other sources.
