It a pronoun?

If "it" is a pronoun, which by definition stands for a noun, what does "it"
stand for in the phrase, "It is raining"?

My English teacher asked us that in the 8th grade and I never knew the


SQA with its "many" resources available to us decided that it was time to take matters into our own hands.  Going to  wonder over here.  Well it turns out that it is like a transvestite of words or CHAMELEON or changeling.  You pick it, it will change as necessary.
